Memphis City Council: A Council committee has approved two measures to privatise auto inspections and exempt new cars. More on the proposals from Fox13, the Commercial Appeal, WMC and the Flyer. The Council once again revisited the issue of residency; more in the CA, Eyewitness News. Also, action on the Fairgrounds.Mayor A C Wharton presents a budget with a $78 million shortfall; more from Eyewitness News, WMC. The Commercial Appeal’s usual positive take. No raises for City employees. Councilman Joe Brown likens the proposed panhandling and beer sales ordinances to segregationist policies of the Fifties and Sixties. Rural/Metrol Ambulance: The company handling ambulance service in the county has turned around response times to emergency calls. Councilwoman Janis Fullilove: She filed an amended campaign disclosure form that now lists a fundraiser she’d previously failed to admit. But other questions remain. City of Memphis: The city’s population held steady over the past decade, says the Census Bureau. Metro Memphis and Shelby County had the slowest and lowest rates of growth of any metro area in Tennessee.
Plough Foundation: They have awarded $4.5 million to the construction of the UT College of Pharmacy Building.
Tennessee Governor’s Race: A profile of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Kim McMillan, where she talks about supporting the income tax. An attack ad against Republican Bill Haslam is on the web. Republican Ron Ramsey’s campaign is coal-powered. Most of the candidates for governor agree that light rail is needed, and that we can’t afford it. Memphis v. Nashville: Nashville’s Metro General Hospital will no longer offer free indigent treatment to illegal immigrants. Memphis City Schools: The Memphis police are investigating a rape allegation at Mitchell High School; a school security officer allegedly is involved. Further reports from WMC, WREG. More on the threat of funding cuts for charter schools. Memphis Fire Department: More than a year after receiving Federal funds for a health and wellness program, it still hasn’t been started. Crime: The Crime Victim’s Center says stalking reports are on the rise. Tennessee: TennCare officials estimate an additional 200,000 get covered under health care reform. No one is yet sure of the costs. Attorney General Bob Cooper says the State will carefully study the new laws before making any decision on court challenges. The TN Supreme Court has ruled that suspects must specifically ask for an attorney before incrimination protections kick in. Open Marketplace: This retail concept uses large retail spaces, like old K-Mart and Wal-Mart stores, to provide hundreds of small retail businesses and entrepreneurs a place to operate without the hassles of running a full business. The first facility is opening next month in Millington.
FedEx: They are gearing up to the a clause in the House FAA Reauthorization Bill that benefits UPS and the Teamsters. Bartlett: Accounting clerk Janet Simpson has been fired for “misappropriating tax payments and diverting money” an undetermined amount of money. Officials have also agreed to settle the Brother Boulevard issue to the tune of one-quarter million dollars. University of Memphis: An exhibition coming up later this year, the “Paul R. Williams Project”, will honor the renowned black architect whose estimated 3000 projects include St Jude here in Memphis. Real Estate: More signs of a commercial real estate rebound as Waterstone Landing Apartments are bought; the Daily News and the Commercial Appeal also report. A brief interview with Lawrence Yun of the National Association of Realtors, who will be speaking in Memphis next week; the Commercial Appeal elaborates. Commercial Alliance Management announced a couple of commercial real estate lease renewals. Financial: SunTrust had its shares downgraded. Millington: With a new library on the horizon, the Library Board is considers securing a new management and staffing company.
DeSoto County: County school officials hope the State waits for Federal funds before cutting jobs or laying off teachers in the schools. A look at the earmarks secured for the County Congressman Travis Childers. West Tennessee: Madison County Democrats are fightin’ mad and promise change. The Dyersburg Electrical System is asking for permission to offer incentives to business customers who use more electricity. Although WorldColor Press is closing, it had just signed a five-year power contract. Collierville: Now that work is progressing on White Church, they town is deciding what to do with the building. |
