The First Memphis Mayoral Debate: WMC Channel 5, the Main Street Journal, the League of Women Voters and Opera Memphis are combining to present the first, comprehensive mayoral debate, tonight at 7PM on Action News 5. Media press release here. (DOC document.) More stories in the Commercial Appeal.

Desoto County: Due to heavy rains this year, the new County school buildings will open on September 8. The Hernando Homebuyer Assistance Program will help 9 families buy a new home. The City of Horn Lake has set up a blog to communicate with citizens. Business: The West Clinic will be running clinical trials for a new breast cancer drug. Local business leaders met with the TN Higher Education Commission about developing a skilled workforce in the state. Tennessee Bar Association: A short interview with Craig P. Sanders about the TBA’s Leadership Law Program. “Cash for Clunkers”: The program ends with nearly 700,00 vehicles bought, not all the money spent and mostly foreign cars sold. Mid-South Community College: The Ciba Foundation has donated $200,000 towards science education and workforce development. Real Estate: The Nettleton Luxury Condominiums on South Front will be auctioned off next month.

Survey Says: Durable goods orders saw their biggest increase in 2 years. Local Media: WKNO is having problems at its new Digital Media Center. Tennessee: The State’s Department of Health has released a report on women’s health across the state and it’s got a lot of very low grades. Financial: According to Barron’s magazine, Morgan Keegan is rated number one for investment returns. Mortgage applications rose 7% last week. West Memphis: The NAACP has gotten involved in the dispute between black members of the City Council and the white police chief … on the side of the police chief! |
