Jeff Sanford, Center City Commission: Sanford’s address to the Commission’s annual luncheon two weeks ago caused a buzz. But it’s been hard to find more than excerpts, until now. Thanks to the CCC, the Main Street Journal is proud to present the full text of his address!
Our Next Mayor: The special election has been moved to October 15 to coincide with the special election to replace State Senator Paul Stanley. More stories on this from Fox13, WMC, Eyewitness News, the Daily News and again, and the Commercial Appeal. A Berje Yacoubian poll on the mayoral race; no numbers reported, though. Business: Tyson’s 3Q profits rose on increased chicken sales. Fiscal 2009 saw a steep sales decline for Buckeye Technologies, though the last quarter was slightly better than the previous one; more in the Commercial Appeal. Tenet Healthcare’s 2Q losses are consistent with last year’s. Delta Air Lines: Their on-time performance worsened in the second quarter. The elite Red Coats — Delta customer service reps — are back at Memphis International. FedExFamilyHouse: The partnership between FedEx and LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center provides long-term residential space for families of patients. More in the Daily News. Survey Says: Consumer spending rose modestly in June, a two month trend. Capital spending by nonfarm business rose in this cycle. Pending home sales index rises in June.
“Cash for Clunkers”: More on the popularity of the program and its money problems. DeSoto County auto buyers are taking advantage. Congress is trying to get more money. Arkansas: Lottery officials are worried by projections that the state’s 15% black population will be 50% of the lottery demographic. State revenues came in not only lower than expected but lower than a year ago. The State will get more than $33 million from various Federal agencies for housing and community-development projects. Unemployment: The local branch of the University of Phoenix will host a career fair and skills workshops this month. The public library’s JobLINC program is another way to get assistance looking for jobs.

Memphis City Council: In non-mayoral business, they asked the Parks Division to find more operating hours for the City’s golf courses. Shelby County Schools: WMC talks with Superintendent John Aitken about the coming school year. TN Tax Holiday: A reminder that this year’s sales tax holiday is this weekend — August 7 - 9. National Civil Rights Museum: A look at the local company doing restoration on Room 306. Porter-Leath: The Isaac Hayes Foundation has donated $21,000 for the Spoonfuls program. Collierville: The Board of Mayor and Aldermen unanimously approved the sale of fruits, vegetables, etc. outside the Communty Services Center via a farmers market. (via the Collierville Independent) Briarcrest Christian School: This Sunday is the grand opening of their new campus merging all of their schools into one complex. School website here. Mississippi: State revenues are down 11% over budget predictions and more than 20% over last year. Democrats are charging Governor Haley Barbour with an illegal veto in the case of Highway Patrol overtime pay. An explanation of sorts for the bizarre system by which the high cost of auto tags is rebated by a tax on new car sales. Bartlett: The town’s Police Department is now on Facebook. It’s to speed up dissemination of information.
DeSoto County: The county is now overflowing with debris thanks to this Summer’s storms. Horn Lake is stepping up code enforcement. The trial of a Southaven City clerk accused of embezzlement has been delayed. The Olive Branch Board of Mayor and Aldermen rejected a request to close a residential street. The Hernando Board approved lights for the Conger Park tennis courts; also in Hernando, the First Assembly of God Church is giving away free school supplies to needy kids.. Foreclosures: Federal stimulus monies are finally flowing into Memphis and now properties will be rehabbed and returned to the home real estate market. Consulting Services Group: Although there is pressure to replace them, the County’s retirement board rejected efforts to replace CSG with a less controversial firm. The Commercial Appeal has more. Center City Commission: The Design Review Board meets today and signage is on the agenda. |
