Carol Chumney vs. The Memphis Flyer! The Flyer takes a closer look at mayoral candidate Carol Chumney. She takes umbrage and accuses them of “sexism.” Jackson Baker responded with an email, which he shared with a local mailing list, and which was passed to the Main Street Journal. City Budget Cut Effects: Budget cuts will mean shorters hours during a brutally hot summer, when Community Centers provide an important aide to the sick and elderly. Also, effective immediately, the mobile vehicle inspection service is cancelled.


Memphis City Council: The Council is still scheduled to take up the mayoral vacancy item on today’s agenda.


Memphis Greenline: A brief report on last night’s meeting, seeking public input on the new green trail utilising the old CSX railroad right of way. There will be a second meeting tonight.


Beale Street: A shooting outside the Plush Club over the weekend, that injured five, has both the club owners and the Beale Street Merchants Association disclaiming responsibility. The former Pat O’Brien’s club has now gone into foreclosure.


Politics: East TN State Rep. Tony Shipley says road projects in his district were threatened if he didn’t vote for the Governor’s budget. House Speaker Kent Williams says that’s not what happened. US Rep. Jim Cooper was on the list of government officials to attend the Washington Post dinner but says he knew nothing of the “pay for access” aspects of it.


Tennessee: The highway death toll over the July 4 holiday was 10.


Gulf Coast Black Mayors Conference: Thanks to the recession, this year’s event has been postponed until later this year. More in the Commercial Appeal.


Real Estate: The CEO of the Education Trust Realty company, Paul Bowers, is retiring. The Memphis Area Association of Realtors says pending local home sales are up, though prices remain sharply down; more in the Commercial Appeal about the otherwise steep drop in sales.


Local Media: Bizjournals, the online division of American City Business Journals (publishers of the Memphis Business Journal) has launched a website giving access to information on hundreds of thousands of businesses in forty cities.

Second Amendment: The County Commission is set to vote on banning gun carry by people with State-issued carry permits in public parks on Wednesday.


City of Memphis: Another $14 million in Federal stimulus funds is coming to the city from several Federal agencies; more in the Commercial Appeal. The City is also going to apply for $64 million from the Federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program, to clean up blighted neighborhoods. Also, they are scheduled to vote on the single-source funding plan from the County.


Opera Memphis: They are announcing their new season as well as some venue changes.


Millington: The Board of Mayor and Aldermen votes to study “red light cameras” and implementing them.


University of Memphis: Graduate student Angela Meduri scored a coveted internship with mark, a cosmetics division of Avon. Beginning this Fall, the university will be offering an online MBA program.


Scams: A Mid-South woman had her Facebook account hacked and hijacked to con money from friends. More from WREG.


Good Morning Memphis: US Rep. Marsha Blackburn visits the show to talk about presidential birth certificates. Losing weight via gastric sleeve surgery. Common household items you can use as cleaners. The Fox13 Insiders, from last week, on Herenton’s remarks about A C Wharton and Steve Cohen.


DeSoto County: The Olive Branch Board of Aldermen still hasn’t started a search for a new police chief. Also in OB, the Humane Society is having a yard sale this Saturday!


Arkansas: The I-49 and I-69 interstate segments may be many years down the road. State Senator Jack Crumbly, also the superintendent of the Earle School District, may face some discipline from the State Board of Education.


The Catholic Diocese of Memphis: Beginning this Fall, the Catholic school system willoffer a program for mildly autistic young children.


Mississippi: Twelve counties are rushing to spend $9 million in bridge replacement money before the State takes it back. Governor Haley Barbour is giving quick answers to new tax questions.


Survey Says: The Employment Trends Index for June was down. An economist is predicting a “double-dip recession” for late 2010. The US service economic sector shrank less than expected.


Business: American Paper Optics has moved into larger offices in Bartlett. Over 100 workers in Shelby County are set to lose their jobs. Medtronic is still scheduled to cut 56 local jobs. Luminetx’ VeinViewer product is continuing to increase in sales worldwide. Proliance International, a Mississippi radiator manufacturer, is now seeking bankruptcy protection.
