Mayor Herenton’s Resignation: Shocker! Willie Herenton changes his mind, may not retire after all. Then he changes it back.

The mayor talks with the Flyer’s Jackson Baker about his infamous 2007 dinner with County Mayor A C Wharton and more in an epic “exit interview.” And WMC reports on that. The two supervising officers involved in the drug possession bust of City Councilwoman Wanda Halbert’s son, Kelvin Burrus, were demoted; more from WREG and Fox13. (The WREG story has some interesting details.) The police union denounces the action as “extremely harsh”.

Fans aren’t enough to beat the heat. Area pools not being maintained are contributing to the mosquito problem.


June Windstorms: Governor Bredesen is seeking Federal disaster assistance for the five TN counties affected.


Business: XP Events will take over sales of team-themed merchandise at the FedEx Forum. An Australian company might buy MGM Mirage casinos. The Federal office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement has notified hundreds of businesses they will be audited for compliance on hiring of illegally resident employees.

Survey Says: Pending home sales rose slightly in May; more in the Daily News. Memphis is America’s 11th sweatiest city? The venture-backed capital liquidity market is at a 6-year low. Another very steep drop in applications in the mortgage refinancing market. Has the recession finally turned a corner? The manufacturing index fell less than expected in June. However, the level of construction spending fell more than expected in May.
