Two Council members were supposed to present alternative budgets yesterday, but where was Harold Collins’ budget? Holocaust Museum Shooter: US Representative Steve Cohen has released a statement. He had been scheduled to attend an event there that evening. WMC report on the shooting. Superintendent Kriner Cash has started the Memphis Literacy Corps program to try to bring students held back or working below grade level back to the norm. Business: The deadline for emergency disaster loans for the past year’s drought and winds from the Small Business Association is July 1. Home Depot is reporting its full-year earnings may be better than forecast. Land Use Control Board: They are meeting today, beginning at 10AM in City Council chambers, downtown. University of Memphis: The dean of the College of Education, Don Wagner, has formed an advisory council to serve as ambassadors for the college and to provide guidance.

It turns out the plan for the State to get financially involved, including potentially buying the financially troubled school, was news to school administrators! Downtown: A new fitness center, Envision Experience, is set to open in the Cadre Building. The TN department of archeology is in town examining the Fort Pickering site before work is done Food Bank: Community groups like Memphis Area Master Gardeners are stepping in to fill the increased needs of the Food Bank by starting community gardens! Metropolitan Planning Organization: The rail line running alongside Southern Avenue, Park Avenue and Poplar Pike will be the subject of a series of public meetings seeking comment on its impact. Grand Junction: Rhodes College archeology students are at the Ames Plantation studying the estimated 200-plus homesteads and prehistoric sites there. Banking: The Federal Reserve has approved the capital plan for Regions Bank to raise $2.5 billion.

Politics: TN Republican senators have produced a draft amendment of their proposed changes to the Bredesen budget; more from Fox13. Future funding for the Governor’s Pre-K program is in question in budget discussions. The vote on extending the TN Ethics Commission is two new members and a Republican majority. Another specialty license plate has been ruled unconstitutional. LeBonheur Children’s Hospital: They are already accepting submissions for the Children’s Holiday Card Art Contest.
Memphis Motorsports Park: They are teaming up with Sun Studios and O’Reilly Auto Parts to award a Sund Studios acoustic guitar winners of NASCAR race days this Summer! University of Tennessee Health Science Center: Local researchers have their own startup, ARISTE Medical, that has a product going to clinical trials that’s getting national buzz.
