Memphis City Schools and Kids: A study by the Centers for Disease Control says that two-thirds of kids have had sex. More startling numbers. A link to the CDC reports. General Session Court: The candidates for Court Clerk are a very different group, being protected by their parties. Transition Planning Commission: Tomorrow’s meeting could produce the final blueprint for an operating plan for the Unified Shelby County schools.

They were just recently ranked number three in a J.D. Power survey of customer satisfaction. NuCor: Company officials lowered their 2nd quarter profit forecast because of foreign steel import and foreign political turmoil. AutoZone: They have hired a new CIO: former Hewlett-Packard executive Ron Griffin. FedEx: The company is building a new distribution center in Minnesota.
Mississippi: There will be 150 jobs coming to Byhalia, thanks to the Roxul, Incorporated; more from the Business Journal. Prescription drug abuse and robberies are on the rise across the State. Congressman Bennie Thompson will speak at a White House forum on government policy and African-Americans Survey Says: Memphis has been ranked the second cheapest city to live in by TheStreet.com. We are also the third manliest city! Tennessee Elections: The House District 57 race is one of the tests of the power of a tea party endorsement in Tennessee. Another such story as the Tennessean looks at the House District 45 Republican primary challenge. The TN Democrats’ insistence there are “missing records” in County Election Commissions has now gone Statewide. Shelby County Schools: Superintendent John Aitken is having his contract placed under a microscope. City of Memphis: Mayor A C Wharton will host a “training camp for dads” this Father’s Day. Collierville: The fight over the location for a dog park is heating up.

Nashville: Five charter schools will appeal their rejection by the Metro school board. Great Heart Academies is also appealing their ruling but may not change the decision. Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall is criticising Mayor Karl Dean’s proposed budget and its funding for his deputies. The Beacon Center finds that 68% of Davidson County residents opposed Dean’s budget. Read their poll. Emergency Management: The City is unconcerned about taking over some emergency management functions from the County. R. Allen Stanford: The disgraced and now convicted tycoon will be sentenced today.
Politics: A group of activists from State Senator Stacey Campfield’s old high school are seeking to remove him from their Hall of Fame. Former State Senator for District 8 and “turncoat” caucus member Mike Williams is still claiming to be a TN Republican; the party disagrees. State Senator Jim Kyle calls for increasing the grocery tax cut and freezing tuition increases with the State’s tax revenue surplus. The TN Highway Patrol will make its arrest database available to the Alcoholic Beverage Commission. Second Amendment: The news that State Representative Curry Todd will get to keep his handgun carry permit isn’t sitting well with some citizens. The Associated Press reports on the case, which is still pending. A tiny bit more from Fox13.
DeSoto County: An enthusiastic crowd turned up to offer suggestions on tweaking the Hernando Parks and Recreation master plan. The County’s realtors need to present a united front to Jackson and Washington, DC. The County is hiring a spokesperson in a year of budget cuts. The Hernando Chamber of Commerce is thriving under new director Susan Fernandez. Dutch Treat Luncheon: At this Saturday’s meeting, they have Woody Degan, candidate for TN Senate District 32, as the featured speaker. The DTL website. National Weather Service: The agency is short $36 million for its budget, which may mean furloughs for two weeks this Summer.
