Memphis City Schools: The attorney for the school system says they won’t allow an audit by the City Council. The School Board decides not to revisit corporal punishment; more in the Commercial Appeal. The Board also elected new officers for the 2010-2011 school year. Another Charles McVean project, Peer Power Foundation, teaches excelling students to help others.


Shelby County Elections: Sheriff candidates Bill Oldham and Randy Wade will appear today on WREG’s Live at Nine. A plea for party unity from Van Turner, chairman of the Shelby County Democratic Party. The State is expecting strong early voting in this election cycle.


Shelby County Commission: Commissioner Mike Carpenter’s plan to reduce paid time off for County employees isn’t going over. More from Fox13 and the Commercial Appeal.


Stella Maris: Steve Cooper’s controversial restaurant is undergoing renovations that neighbors worry is cover for an upcoming strip club.

Delta Air Lines: The Department of Transportation has fined the airline for not correctly identifying some non-Delta flights.


Christian Brothers University: They have filed a construction permit for new student housing on their campus.


Southwest Tennessee Community College: With $1.4 million from the Memphis Bioworks Foundation, and a Federal Green Jobs Training Program they will offer courses on “alternative energy”.


Mississippi: A school closing in Biloxi is being labelled racist.


The Leadership Academy: A gift from the First Tennessee Foundation will fund their “Celebrate What’s Right” luncheon series.


Arkansas: The State Board of Education has set new math and English standards. Opening statements in the trial of Dr Randeep Mann; more from Fox13. State Attorney General Dustin McDaniel will reimburse the State for the private use of his State vehicle.


ArtsMemphis: They will have a grant-application workshop on State-sponsored Arts Build Communities grants.

Shelby County Juvenile Court: Arresting officers will now be allowed to give a Summons in Lieu of Transport to juveniles arrested for these seven crimes. This will free up officers and “cut down on crime”. The Commercial Appeal also reports.

Shelby County Sheriff: The two inmates who escaped while being treated at The MED are still on the run. Three deputies have been reduced in rank and pay grade in a dispute over their promotions; more in the Commercial Appeal.


Flooding: Sunday night and Monday’s rains led to flash flooding around Midtown. More in the Commercial Appeal.


Governor’s Race: Nashville’s Post Politics live-blogged the debate between all four Republican and Democratic candidates at Belmont University last night. The Tennessean’s InSession live-blogged it. Republican Bill Haslam’s latest campaign ad. Democrat Mike McWherter’s campaign has $1.5 million on hand; Republican Zach Wamp raised over $800,000 in the second quarter. DeSoto County: The graduation and dropout rates for County schools easily beat the State average. Local officials will try to sell the Federal Clean Cities Initiative.


Bartlett: The Board of Mayor and Aldermen will explore the town paying for aldermen’s health insurance premiums at the full-time employee rate.


Politics: The Eighth Congressional District race gets harsher and harsher. Republican candidate Dr Ron Kirkland’s brother is testing the limits of campaign financing; more on the story. Independent / Tea Party candidate Donn Janes is raffling off an AR-15 rifle. In a new ad, Republican Dr George Flinn changes his campaign tactics.

Governor Phil Bredesen on the final days of his administration. In a New York Times story, he calls for the Democratic Party to become more “centrist”; related story with more links.


Saint Francis Hospital-Memphis: They will be hosting a series of seminars on joint-replacement advances, beginning Thursday.


Germantown: The Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted to buy the amphitheater property but goes back to square one on bids for construction.


Christ Community Health Services: They have opened their Hickory Hills Dental Center.
