Unemployment: Shelby County’s unemployment rate for December rose to 10.3%, the highest metro rate in the state. The City of Memphis now has 11.1% unemployment. Memphis Firefighters: Mayor A C Wharton has expressed his concern at the number of firefighters with criminal and felony records. Downtown: Next week, the Center City Commission’s Design Review Board will study Phil Woodard’s plans for a South Bluffs office building. The new Humphreys School of Law is having an impact on business and the social feel. Real Estate: Memphis had only the 45th highest foreclosure rate of 203 metro areas studied.

Shelby County Head Start: They have received a $1.6 million grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services to open an Early Head Start program. Memphis Airport International: FedEx plan to either demolish or build new hangars; more in the Commercial Appeal. FedEx will also be using one of their new Boeing 777s to transport pandas from Washington to Chengdu, China. Cargo traffic numbers were up in 2009. The MED: Bill Dries of the Daily News looks at City Council resistance to also providing funding. The MED is bracing for more bad news from Governor Phil Bredesen’s State of the State address next week because if cuts are as severe as expected the “close The MED” option comes into play. Mississippi: Entergy is warning customers of possible power outages. On Thursday night, the County schools announced they will be open today.
West Tennessee: The H.O.P.E. (Helping Our People Endure) program helps the troubled in tough times. The Northwest Tennessee Regional Port Authority is awaiting word of its $35 million grant for an intermodal facility. (via the Dyersburg State Gazette) The Dorena-Hickman Ferry is closed until next week, due to high waters on the Mississippi. The Discovery Park of America project is back on track. UT-Martin received a check for $43 million. (via NWTN Today.com) DeSoto County: The county’s unemployment rate for December was 7.7%. The Memphis Indoor Model Airplane Classic is actually held in Southaven now and the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals will be using R/C airplanes to engender interest in aviation into a new generation of kids. |
