Mark White announces Republican campaign for Legislature
Republican leader and small business owner Mark White today announced his
candidacy for House District 83. Representative Brian Kelsey, the incumbent
in HD 83, plans to resign his seat following the special election
Republican Primary for Senate District 31 on October 15th. White will be a
Republican candidate for Kelsey’s House seat in a special election to occur
sometime in January 2010.
“I’m concerned about what’s going on in Washington. Corporate bailouts,
stimulus packages, new energy taxes, nationalized health care—Washington is
out of control. I’m running for State Representative because I don’t
want Nashville to become like Washington,” stated White.
White says his priority is to keep Tennessee’s government lean and
efficient. “We’re blessed to live in a state without an income tax. As a state
representative, I’ll fight any attempt to impose an income tax on
Tennesseans or any other tax increases,” remarked White. “Washington doesn’t
understand how to live within its means, but I’ll do everything I can to reduce
the influence of state government in our lives, our pockets and our
businesses,” he said.
White is a small business advocate who currently chairs the local chapter
of the National Federation of Independent Business. He is a former teacher
and principal once named “teacher of the year.” He is founder and
Director of the Global Children’s Educational Foundation, which helps children
living in poverty gain a meaningful education.
A supporter of charter schools, White is pro-life, supports traditional
marriage and our Second Amendment rights. He supports lawsuit reform and
allowing small businesses to pool together and purchase health insurance for
employees.
White has been married 28 years. He and his wife, Kathy, have one daughter
and two grandsons. He is a graduate of the University of Memphis and
member of the Church of Christ.
Former Memphis City Councilman Brent Taylor will serve as the treasurer of
White’s campaign. District 83 includes half of Germantown and much of
East Memphis.
