More mayoral forums and debates are upcoming from the National Association of Women Business Owners on September 8, WREG on September 26, as well as the Cordova Leadership Council on September 29.

Memphis City Schools: Professors from the University of Memphis give their opinions on the “no flunk” policy. US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan toured local schools and met with Shelby County and State legislators.


Tennessee: The State’s share of the Pfizer health care fraud settlement is $16 million. More from the Commercial Appeal. UT interim president Jan Symek says graduation rates need to go up.

Memphis Area Legal Services: A group of age 65+ local attorneys, the “Gray Knights” is volunteer effort involving 15 hours of pro bono work a year. The Commercial Appeal has more.


University of Tennessee Health Science Center: Chancellor Hershel “Pat” Wall is stepping down as of September 30; more from Fox13, the Daily News and the Commercial Appeal. The department of obstetrics and gynecology is starting two new gynecological and maternal programs. More on that in the Daily News.


Business: The Coldwater Creek store in the Wolfchase Galleria holds its “Try It On For The Cure” fundraiser Saturday the 12th for the Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure fund. Details are still sketchy about the job cuts at Pacific Rail.

Pinnacle Airlines: An analyst rates their stock as “grossly undervalued” and believes their stock price should double.


University of Memphis: P.A.U.S.E. is a student organisation for women only. UofM administration releases stats they claim disprove racism allegation. The College of Education has more nationally recognised programs than almost any other university or college. The Student Health Center is there for all kinds of student health problems. The school predicts this year’s enrollment is up 7%.

H1N1 Virus: From the Centers for Disease Control, a video explaining the symptoms of the swine flu. Local governemnt officials are saying they are as prepared as possible for the flu and the shots will be here in October. Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton and MCS Superintendent Dr Kriner Cash say all school children will be vaccinated. More from WMC, Eyewitness News, WREG and the Commercial Appeal and again. Employees, lawyers, police and visitors to the Criminal Justice Center are worried. If the flu pandemic comes, the Federal government will work with schools over mandatory testing.


“Tear Down the Walls”: This multi-denominational concert is tonight at the Levitt Shell. It hopes to bring together Memphians from across every divide you can think of. Website here.


Mississippi: Governor Haley Barbour will make a budget announcement today; more cuts are expected. The State appears to be ready to handle the H1N1 virus. Plans are already underway to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Freedom Ride in 2011.


Trash & Blight: A union-driven work slowdown, over longer routes and the City’s hiring of an outside waste management company, is being blamed for the backed up trash problem around the city. The City of Memphis is getting calls and complaints about several areas around the city where rats are out of control.


Politics: Starting next month, Republican canidates on State ballots will be listed first. US Rep. John Tanner (D - 8th) criticeses the Obama administration’s “everything now” approach. (via NWTN Today) A court appearance for City Councilwoman Janis Fullilove.


Collierville: The Board of Mayor and Aldermen votes to keep trash collection in-house. They also approved three changes to the new police / court facility. And, the approved the annual street paving contract. (stories via the Collierville Independent)


West Tennessee: The Dyer County Fair is offering two “stimulus packages” — $10,000 one night and a Toyota Yaris another! (via the Dyersburg State-Gazette)


Financial: The new fund president of SouthernSun Asset Management is Cliff Sulcer. First Tennessee Bank has shuffled its presidential executives. Regions Financial named Michael Willoughby as their new director of credit risk.


Home Sales: July home sales in the Memphis market were slightly up from June. The Commercial Appeal has more.


Arkansas: State Republicans are criticising the firing of the Legislature’s communications director and the hiring of a PR firm. They also are asking for the governor to schedule a primary to fill a vacant State Senate seat. Despite an increase in State income tax collections, revenues were still below forecast!


DeSoto County: The Southaven Town Centre is beginning to fill back up after months of empty bays. The Hernando Public Works Department finally has a new head, and he’s a familiar face. A mobile van is filling in as the latest satellite post office for unlucky Southaven, at least for now.


Survey Says: August was the second lowest month for job cuts, so far this year. The median pay increase this year is just 3%! Worker productivity hits a six-year high.


Summer Youth Employment Program: The City is now assuring kids all checks will go out this week.
