Memphis’ Next Mayor: The Commercial Appeal (via their Eye on City Hall blog) defends and explains their call that candidate Carol Chumney would replace Police Director Larry Godwin. Godwin reacts to all the campaign talk from the candidates.

Raleigh Career Center: They report that youth unemployment is much higher than the average for adults.


University of Memphis: The school’s controversial, mandatory Dining Dollar$ program has now been amended so that juniors and seniors can opt out. Students accused of a “dine and dash” at the nearby Perkins restaurant on Poplar. (stories via the Daily Helmsman) The school is working to forge new ties with Southwest Tennessee Community College, to make transfers of credits and classes easier.


Arkansas: First-day sales of the lottery were more than $1.2 million. The Attorney General believes a ban on gun carry in churches would be upheld in court. He also advised that the Public Employees Retirement Board would be the one to decide to make their records public.

Second Amendment: The Attoryney General released a followup opinion on “gun carry”, clarifying the issue of State parks and school use, narrowing the definition somewhat. Knox County has approved “gun carry” in County parks, 13 to 5.


Tennessee: The State Building Commission approved the purchase of 3800 acres in Haywood County for the megasite; more from the Commercial Appeal. Heavy rains the past few weeks have pushed many crops to record or near-record yields.


Real Estate: Home prices rose in July. Los Compadres restaurant is forced to move east on Poplar to a new strip mall space; more from WREG.


Delta Air Lines: They closed a $2.1 billion financing deal.


Business: Verso Paper is partnering with Time to increase certified forest acreage in Maine. Shares of Thomas & Betts rose nicely after an analyst upgraded his outlook on their stock. Goodyear is saying their new contract with the United Steelworkers will save hundreds of millions. Profits for Walgreen’s were down, but not by forecast expectations.
