CHUMNEY CALLS FOR INDEPENDENT PROSECUTOR ON WHARTON CAR INSPECTION

–Today, Carol Chumney, former state legislator and City Councilwoman, called for an
outside prosecutor to be appointed to investigate the issue of the use of a County
employee, and the failure to adhere to proper automobile inspection procedures by
County Mayor AC Wharton. The County Mayor has referred the matter to the Asst.
County Attorney. The County Attorney is appointed by the County Mayor, and Chumney
states that this presents a conflict of interest.

Chumney says, “The general public waits in long lines to have their cars inspected.
They certainly don’t expect their elected officials to be above the same laws and
ordinances they are required to follow.”

Wharton has revealed that his Mercedes Benz was taken through inspection by a county
employee on personal time. Chumney calls for a complete investigation by an
independent prosecutor. Chumney says “this is just more of the same” politics and
the double standard that has caused many of the problems existing in Memphis today.
