*First Annual Orange Mound Juneteenth Celebration*
*(Sat., June 20, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.)*
*Brings Memphis Talent, Fun, Food and Games*

The First Annual Orange Mound Juneteenth Celebration will take place at
the Silver Park Plaza, 3019 Park Ave. (at Semmes), on Sat., June 20, 11
a.m.-9 p.m.

Everyone is invited as there is free admission to the OM Juneteenth
Celebration. Games, water slides and moon bounces will be on sight.
Concessions include barbecue, corndogs, snow cones, funnel cakes, cotton
candy and other items. There also will be a talent show, jump rope
competition, dance contest and live music performances from some of the
Memphis area’s top talent.

Sheba Potts-Wright and O.T. Sykes are scheduled to perform during the
event. Music artists Dre, Darrell Wilson, gospel choirs and others also will
highlight the June 20 celebration.

Admission is free to the OM Juneteenth Celebration, and vendor booths

Juneteenth began 144 years ago, recognized as being the oldest known
celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. The Emancipation
Proclamation was actually issued on Sept. 22, 1862, and enacted on Jan. 1,
1863. It was two and one-half years later, on June 19, 1865, when Union
soldiers delivered news in Galveston, Tex., that the war was over and that
slaves were now free.

This year’s day-long OM Juneteenth Celebration honors the legacy of
community activist and Hanley Elementary School Principal Ruby J. Payne.
