Memphis City Council: A look at some of the features of the new City budget. Councilman Shea Flinn talks iwth Fox13 about yesterday’s budget. If the City loses the lawsuit over funding City schools, there may be a property tax increase. Police Director Larry Godwin says cuts to his department won’t affect safety.

Survey Says: The recessions is expected to end in the third quarter of this year, says the Economic Advisory Committee of the American Bankers Association. The number of mortgages and applications fell for the fourth straight week. According to a Brookings Institution report, the Memphis economy ranks 38th for strength. Consumer prices rose less than expected!


University of Tennessee: Tuition is expected to rise 7 to 20 percent next school year!

Tennessee: US Rep. Steve Cohen has sent a letter to Governor Phil Bredesen urging him to apply to FEMA for disaster assistance. More from the Commercial Appeal.


Politics: The Flyer’s Jackson Baker talks up the mayoral possibilities of City Councilmen Jim Strickland and Kemp Conrad. Former University of Memphis student, Blake Graves, a legislative staffer working for Memphis Rep. Karen Camper was caught sending offensive emails; he resigned. President Obama praises a vote by US Rep. Steve Cohen on war funding bill.

Governor Phil Bredesen’s budget package is now ready for a vote after “criminally insane” amendment added. A tentative deal is reached. A peek behind the budget dealing scenes. Words between House Speaker Kent Williams and Rep. Gerald McCormick.

The State House sponsor of the TN Ethics Commission extension bill, Rep. Susan Lynn, has kept it withdrawn, assuring it dies this session, and so does the Commission. The revived charter school bill has passed committee and is headed for a floor vote; more in the Daily News and the Commercial Appeal. The Hosue also voted to delay implementing the requirement of the Tennessee Voter Confidence Act to have voting machines create a paper trail.

The State Senate failed to approve a bill to close the concealed carry gun database.

The MED: County Commissioner Mike Carpenter [Ed.: corrected earlier post] says they are down to 10 days operating cash. They are considering filing a lawsuit to get more of the Federal stimulus monies coming to Tennessee.


Germantown: City schools were awarded a $91,000 grant from the Germantown Education Foundation for computers and related items. The city was recognised by the Tennessee City Management Association for excellence.
