Earth Day Harbor Clean-Up - April 25th
Memphis, Tennessee - Earth Day Harbor Clean-Up is a collaborative effort to
clean-up the downtown riverfront. The event is produced by The Mississippi
River Corridor - TN (MRCT), in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers, Clean Memphis, Riverfront Development Corporation, Comcast Cares,
Friends for Our Riverfront and The Sierra Club. Interested volunteers should
visit www.cleanmemphis.org or email janet@cleanmemphis.org to sign-up.
Volunteers will meet at the riverfront cobblestones adjacent to Jefferson
Davis Park at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2009 to commence trash pick-up.
Bags and gloves will be provided by the City of Memphis Division of Public
Works; however, it is also recommended that volunteers bring a pair of
gloves in the event that we have more volunteers than gloves. Complimentary
water and assorted sodas will be provided by Pepsi America.
“This is an important Earth Day event for the Memphis District Corps of
Engineers. Not only does it provide a meaningful service for our
riverfront, it also allows us to collaborate with other organizations that
share a common interest in the environment. Events such as this can
possibly lead to future partnerships and endeavors,” states Edward P.
Lambert, Chief, Environmental Branch for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,
Memphis District.
At noon all volunteers are invited to join us for an Earth Day celebration
lunch and networking opportunity with food graciously provided by
Chick-fil-A.
Comcast graciously agreed to provide over 100 volunteers for this event.
Trevor Yant, Vice-President/General Manager, Comcast Cable of Memphis states
that “Comcast employees are involved year-round in volunteer activities in
the communities in which they live. As a company, Comcast supports
organizations and efforts that enhance the quality of life for all in the
communities that we serve. Comcast Cares Day, which is April 25, is a day
when Comcast employees, friends and relatives engage in community service
nationwide as a way of demonstrating collective involvement and
participation. This year we project that more than 400 local employees,
relatives and friends will partner with approximately 50,000 Comcasters
nationwide to perform community service on Comcast Cares Day.”
The mission of the Mississippi River Corridor in Tennessee is to identify,
conserve and interpret the region’s natural, cultural and scenic resources
to improve the quality of life and prosperity in West Tennessee.
