Memphis City Schools: WREG once again catches MCS not reporting school violence to the Memphis Police Department or State officials. The Flyer’s John Branston reports from the lines of parents awaiting optional school enrollment. More reports from WMC, WREG and the Commercial Appeal. Collierville: Plans for the conversion of farmlands into Hinton Park were moved forward with the selection of a New York consultant to lead the process.
Crawfish Boils: It’s that time of year for the annual crawfish boils. Mostly downtown, but all around the city. Memphis Police Department: Police Director Larry Godwin reacts to the House vote to allow gun carry in some restaurants. In other news, the department honored 32 officers who went above and beyond their duties.

The House passes the bill to allow gun carry in some restaurants. And the House also passed the abortion-right restriction bill. More details on the Senate vote to limit driver’s license testing to five languages. AutoZone Park: In Baseball America magazine’s recent Top 10 Minor League Ballparks list, our field was ranked Number One! The Daily News also reports. WKNO: They have put out a call for “photos, films and stories” about Downtown Memphis for their next installment of Memphis Memoirs. Survey Says: According to the US Labor Department, job openings and new hires still remain low. According to the Business Roundtable, most CEOs predict sales and employment to drop further; more in the Daily News. MainStreet.com (not Main Street Journal, btw) ranks Tennessee the ‘least happy’ Southern state and 40th nationwide. Small Business Council: The former Metro Business Council has a new name, but the same job. Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce: In a collarboration with Onvia, they will now give member’s daily private and public bid notices. MISSISSIPPI: Governor Haley Barbour will sign a bill improving school accountability and giving the State the power to declare some school districts ’states of emergency’. |
Memphis City Council: Unanimously passed a policy change regarding PILOTs in Tuesday’s session. They also passed 11 out of 12 public safety measures, with spirited debate. More on that at Eyewitness News and the Commercial Appeal.The Big News: Mayor Willie Herenton promises no layoffs, no cuts, no tax increase and raises for employees in next year’s budget. Much more from WMC and the Commercial Appeal. The City and the school system are due back in court today over City funding of the school system. The City is asking for a stay of the chancellor’s ruling the City must pay $57 million. Shelby County Re-Appraisals: Eyewitness News looks at some people going to the Assessor’s Office to make their appeal and review. Wolfchase Galleria: Even before Rep. Joe Towns’ bill is made law, this mall has already banned saggy pants with success. BUSINESS: Christ Companion Senior Care will open its first out-of-state facility in Cordova. PFSweb signed a major contract with Army & Air Force Exchange Service for local logistics services. International Paper is closing a Florida plant and cutting 100 jobs. MGM Mirage is putting some of their casinos up for sale. The recession is forcing architects to rethink the way they do business. ARKANSAS: State Senate approves ban on realistic toy guns, already approved by the House; more from WREG. They also passed the State budget and a plan to spend the State’s $300 million budget surplus. A bill easing constitutional limits on consumer credit loans passed to the full House, but may go back to committee.
Stanford Financial Group: Another group of investors is asking an appeals court to free up some of the $1.7 billion in frozen assets. Treasure Park Apartments: Residents in this Frayser complex say being without electricity, and soon to be without water, isn’t acceptable when they’ve been paying their rents. The resident manager responds. In a related story, nearby Riverwood Apartments have not been torn down despite year-old City assurances it would be. Lifeblood: New director Susan Berry-Buckley is considering a new building and finding ways of increasing the percentage of Memphians who donate blood as she charts new course for the blood bank.
