Shelby County Re-Appraisals: County Property Assesor Cheyenne Johnson sent a letter to Deidre Malone (PDF document), chair of the County Commission, asking that no more job cuts happen in her office, claiming due to the “expected controversial nature” of this year’s reappraisals they “expect a dramatic increase in the number of informal reviews and appeals.” However, in this February 4 story in the Commercial Appeal, she says her office isn’t “… anticipating a significant change in the overall value of property in Shelby County.” Commissioners are upset.

The program will repeat Friday at noon, and then Saturday nights at 9:30PM on channel 17 throughout April.

Mayor Wharton will also be announcing the Infant Mortality Reduction Initiative, in cooperation with Governor Phil Bredesen and Christ Community Health Services — to combat infant mortality in Shelby County.

MISSISSIPPI: A bill is introduced in the House to allow some convictions to be erased after two years. Another House bill to change Medicaid office visits for recertification failed; related story from WMC, WMC. House - Senate talks over raising the cigarette tax have stalled again. Governor Haley Barbour signs a bill granting a clothing sales tax holiday for the first weekend in July; more from WMC. And, a bill to allow public votes in parts of the state on alcohol sale-by-the-glass in restaurants is advancing.


Survey Says: The Association of Fundraising Professionals says fewer than half of organisations surveyed raised more money last year than in 2007. The Conference Board reports that consumer confidence inched up slightly in March, though from historic lows. Online ad spending was up 11% in 2008, according to Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers. The American Society of Civil Engineers rates TN’s infrastructure building and maintenance a ‘C’. Activist group Tennessee Health Care Campaign says one-third of state’s residents went uninsured in the past two years.


DeSoto County: Fatal trench collapse workplace accident last October in Hernando leads to citations for safety violations. Also in Hernando, the CA looks at the twelve candidates in various Aldermen races. While already receiving $600,000 in Federal stimulus funds, the city of Horn Lake wants six times more.
