MPACT MEMPHIS Hosts The 1ST Bipartisan Debate Watch Party

MEMPHIS, TN, September 23, 2008 - As the most controversial U.S. Presidential Debate in history takes place only miles away from the city of Memphis, MPACT Memphis will be making its own history by hosting the first ever, Bipartisan Debate Watch Party. The Watch Party is this Friday, September 26, 2008 from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m. This free event will be held at the Red Rooster, 140 Lt. George W. Lee Ave. (Across from the Gibson Guitar), and food will be provided. In addition to the viewing party, Change Memphis will be on hand to register voters.

With MPACT fervently growing its membership and increasing its efforts to make not only young professionals, but also the community more aware and engaged in civic issues, the organization saw the value of hosting an event of this caliber. In support of MPACT’s efforts, the Young Republicans and Young Democrats of Shelby County will be participating in this event, as well. “Our momentum as an organization is steadily increasing and the idea to hold a Debate Watch Party perfectly aligned with many of MPACT’s current goals,” said Gwyn Fisher, Executive Director, MPACT Memphis. “A knowledgeable voter can make a more informed decision. MPACT wants its constituents to know that voter participation and registration is the right of all citizens to participate in the affairs of their government and is one of the cornerstones of country.”

MPACT partnered with Change Memphis to ensure that the citizens of Memphis fully understand and hold a strong appreciation for the critical importance that Voter Registration plays in the political process. Change Memphis is a nonpartisan coalition formed to increase voter participation and raise awareness of amendments to the city and county charters that will appear on the upcoming ballot. “The fact that each vote counts, is the basis for full participation by Memphians in determining their choice of government,” said Frank Langston, Co-Chair of Civic Engagement, MPACT Memphis. “I encourage everyone to participate in this election, and if you are not registered to vote …please do so as soon as possible.”

For months political parties have felt the divide amongst the country and its citizens in support of their presidential candidate, but this Friday, MPACT is offering Memphians the opportunity to civilly commune together in support of the issues that face our country. “The importance of this event is invaluable to our city, in that it heightens the political awareness of our citizens and allows two factions to assemble together for one common goal,” said Andre Gibson, Co-Chair of Civic Engagement, MPACT Memphis.

MPACT Memphis is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that believes a Memphis influenced by young professionals is a Memphis that can attract and retain young professionals. The programs offered by MPACT Memphis give young professionals access to the who, what and where that is unique to Memphis, connect young professionals with emerging leaders and service opportunities, welcome newcomers and student interns to the city, and keep young professionals current on urban developments and key community issues.
